On Place

Some writers can create anywhere -- from airport lounges to leaning on the steering wheel of their car while waiting for their kids to finish soccer practice. Many successful writers will relate such stories, while others, like Virginia Woolf, require rooms of their own. I agree. With all of it.

Having a room where one can lock the door and hang out the DO NOT DISTURB sign is appealing. So is sitting in a busy cafe or under a tree or the break room at work. Finding a place to write is really about making the time. And it doesn't have to be a lot of time. Committing to write regularly for even a few minutes will put more words on the page than searching for the ultimate place and a long, undisturbed stretch of time.
